CHANDIGARH, May 13: The supporters of the St Soldier’s School started celebrating the victory and did not wait for the final nod of the referee Bimal Sharma’s when their players were going through the proceeding of tie-breaker to decide the winner of the day in the Chandigarh mini football championship at Sector 17 Football Stadium here today. In the tie-breaker, St John’s players missed all five penalty kicks while St Soldier’s converted the first two (2-0) and took home the winner’s trophy.

The teams were held goalless draw during the regulation period. Even the extra time failed to break the deadlock and tie-breaker rule was applied.And during the tie-beaker, St John’s School players lost their concentration and the contest. Ashwin failed to convert the first penalty kick for St John’s School. And Aditya also missed his chance to bring the team back of the winning track. When Gauhar, who came in third also missed the penalty shot, the team lost hope, if they had any to win the title. So nervous was Harneek, who was the last player to take the spot kick, he hit wide the target.

However, Surinder netted the first spot kick for St Soldier’s. And riding on the wave, his team mate Sanjay consolidating the margin by netting the second. Mandeep, Amarjit and Vikram failed to convert for St Soldier’s, but by then the team had already claimed the day’s honours.

Earlier, in the stipulated period, St Soldier’s School boys, who had closely observed their opponents during the semifinal encounter yesterday against defending champions Shivalik Public School-41, played an attacking game. But failed to grab the upper hand as Surinder’s close range shot was saved by goalkeeper Harneek. He missed another opportunity to score in the later part of the first half.

In the second session, both the teams were engaged in mid-field skirmish. However, in the dying moments of the game, St John’s made a dangerous move. But timely clearance by Amarjit saved the day.

When twenty minutes of two halves could not decide the winner of the day. The match dragged on to extra time. Even that failed to break the deadlock.However, in the tie-breaker St Soldiers beat St John’s School 2-0.

During the meet, eight promising players from different teams were spotted and were given prizes for their outstanding performance in the matches. The players are: Gauhar, Aditya Sharma (St John’s School-26), Surinder Singh, Sanjay (St Soldier’s School-28), Inderpreet Singh (Government Model School-22), Chetan Sharma (Government Model Senior Secondary School-23) and Jugbinder Singh and Gurdeep Singh of (Guru Tegh Bahadur Public School-16).
