A convention on Restoration of Democracy in Myanmar, ahead of Myanmar head Senior General Than Shwe’s visit to New Delhi, took an even more controversial turn today after JD(U) president George Fernandes objected to a picture of Congress president Sonia Gandhi at the convention venue.

Upset that Sonia Gandhi’s picture should find place at the convention in Constitution Club, Fernandes asked for its removal. ‘‘What business does she have here?,’’ a delegate quoted him as saying.

As delegates dispersed for lunch, some JD(U) workers removed Sonia’s photograph and handed it over to the club staff.

Later, Congress spokesperson Girija Vyas condemned the incident. ‘‘It only shows how intemperate he can get in his blind opposition to Sonia,’’ she said.

The Congress, however, had no idea how Sonia Gandhi’s photograph made it to the club. ‘‘We don’t know when and how it came up there,’’ said another Congress spokesman Abhishek Singhvi.
