The International Cricket Council (ICC) today said South African batsman Herschelle Gibbs was eligible to play the second Test against Pakistan since the two-match ban on him for making racist remarks was suspended pending a decision on his appeal against it.

The ICC said in a statement that it did not expect the process of hearing Gibbs’ appeal to take place before the second Test, which is scheduled to start on Friday, and hence the batsman would be allowed to play as per the rules governing the ICC Code of Conduct hearings.

“The name of the Appeals Commissioner and the date set for the appeal will be announced in due course, although it is not anticipated it will take place before the second Test at Port Elizabeth,” the ICC release said.
