NEW DELHI, FEB 28: Five criminals have been nabbed and two runaway girls restored to their home, thanks to viewers’ responses to the Doordarshan programme Fugitive – The Most Wanted, which is now also available on the web.
Apart from helping those who want to report about any criminal, the website fugitiveindia.com aims at helping the police to access photographs and information about any of the criminals who have appeared on the programme.
Programme producer, director and presenter Suhaib Ilyasi said that the website would help students of criminology and trainee officers. The website also contains a statewise directory of names of criminals in North India, and of a list of concerned police officers with their addresses.
Nasrul alias Israel alias Raja was arrested in Jalpaiguri some time ago for a killing in the Capital after a viewer identified him on seeing a photograph in the programme. The viewer alerted the producers of the programme after the local police refused to act. Daulat Ram surrendered to the police after his photograph was flashed on the programme and confessed to killing one Dr R K Dhingra of Faridabad, and also the father-in-law of his sister who allegedly torturing her.
Guddu Shukla, an associate of Sri Prakash Shukla who was involved in extortion and murder cases, was arrested from a hotel in Patna after evading the police for four years. Harminder Singh alias Harry who had committed forgery and taken money from people after promising them jobs overseas was arrested after being wanted by the police for two years. Ishwar Singh, a member of the Pardhi gang wanted for murders and theft in different parts of the country for the past seven to eight years, was arrested in Muzaffarnagar after a friend realised the truth about him on seeing his sketch on the programme.
Two young girls from Haryana, who had fled their homes to try their luck in Hindi films in Mumbai, panicked in the train after being questioned by the ticket in-charge for travelling without ticket. A co-passenger offered help as he was carrying the telephone number of the programme.
