Sikdar bags bronze medal
Jyoti Rmoyee Sikdar picked up another bronze, her second of the meet and India’s sixth in the current Asian Championships, but it was PT Usha who raised hopes of India’s first gold medal with a blistering run in 23.27 seconds under rain-swept conditions. Usha and the men’s 4 x 400 metres team, which clocked a new national record time of 3:06.33 should be among medals for sure.

As the torrential rains lashed Fukuoka, venue of the Asian Track and Field Championship, the organisers hastily announced the postponement of all field events to Wednesday morning. That decision did not amuse the Indian camp, which was keenly following the fortunes of Neelam J Singh, potential medallist in the women’s discus throw. The event was midway through the third round and Neelam, leading the field with a second round throw of 56.34 metres, was getting ready for the third try when competition was halted.
O’Brien is king
Dan O’Brien has confirmed his status as the finest all-round track and field athlete of the 1990s before setting his sights on the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
