CHANDIGARH, JULY 19: The Shatabdi Express, which arrives here from Delhi at 10.45 a.m., has been running at least 30 minutes behind schedule for the past several days. The Delhi-Kalka Himalayan Queen is also arriving here late.
Confirming the late running of trains, a senior railway officer, when contacted at Ambala, said train speed has been restricted due to ongoing track maintenance in Delhi Division, which results in loss of at least 22 minutes. In summers, he said, when temperatures exceed 35 degrees, the tracks have to be re-adjusted to prevent them from "buckling" and the trains have to run at reduced speed.
The Shatabdi was behind schedule by 50 minutes today. It was late by an hour on Sunday and 30 minutes on Saturday.
The Himalayan Queen, which normally trails the Shatabdi Express, is arriving here ahead of the Shatabdi, though it too is running late. The Himalayan Queen was behind schedule by 20 minutes today. Yesterday, it had been late by about 10 minutes, even though a top member of the railway board was travelling in a specially attached saloon car with it.
