Sergio Garcia and Lee Westwood emerged as the standard-bearers for Europe as they claimed their third win in a tense round of foursomes matches at The Belfry on Saturday.
The pair conceded three bogeys and carded only two birdies but that was still enough to earn a 2 & 1 victory over Stewart Cink and Jim Furyk.
It proved important after two early European defeats had put the United States 5-1/2-4-1/2 ahead before a last-hole victory for Colin Montgomerie and Bernhard Langer left Sam Torrance’s men with a one-point advantage.
Furyk and Cink badly lost accuracy off the tee during the homeward nine and a pushed Cink drive at the 16th, which found heavy rough, ended with a bogey six to hand Garcia and Westwood a two-hole lead.
The Spaniard and Englishman closed out the match at thenext, with Garcia nervelessly draining a two-footer to settle it with a par five.
