After allowing small investors to own gold assets enroute mutual funds, market regulator Sebi is set to come up with another set of guidelines to enable investors reap the benefits of real estate sector boom.

‘‘Last year, we came up with norms on gold exchange traded fund. This year, we will come up with norms for real estate funds’’. Sebi chairman M. Damodaran said referring to a long-standing demand of realty sector.

Small investors can buy small units in real estates enroute mutual funds and benefit from the capital appreciation in the realty sector.

Instruments like equity, mortgage and hybrid REITs can offer investors high-yield as well as a liquid methods of investing in real estate.

At the same time, real estate players can raise funds easily through REITs.

REITs are operational in advanced economies of the US, Europe, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. PTI
