CHENNAI, July 21: The Indian sea bass, or `koduwa’, as it is locally known, is being projected as an alternative to shrimp farming, in view of its export potential. The Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture has reported a breakthrough in the breeding of the fish, which commands a price ranging from five to 10 dollars a kg in the international market. The CIBA research team has been working on the project in the city since 1990, according to P V Dehadrai, Deputy Director General (Fisheries), ICAR. He said sea bass was highly disease-resistant, and would be a viable alternative to shrimp farming.
