SATARA, Oct 8: Solving a double murder mystery after four years, Satara police recently arrested a former sarpanch of Sokan village for allegedly contracting the killings to hush up his illicit relationship with a woman in the same village.

Sixtyfive-year-old Bapu Shankar Jadhav and his 55-year-old brother Nana were found murdered on the night of April 27, 1994, which going by circumstances was seen as a dacoity. The gangsters, now cooling their heels in police custody, had misled investigators by stealing valuables and cash from the victim’s house.

Relentless efforts by police inspector Laxman Shejal and his team, however, recently unearthed the facts, leading to the arrest of the contract killers Rajendra Deshmukh, Sudhakar Pawar, Dattatray Shinde and Ashok Shinde all from Shindewadi in Solapur district.

During interrogation, the gangsters admitted to have committed the murders at the behest of Bhairu Anna Jadhav who also was a member of the agriculture produce market committee in Maan taluka. They were paid Rupees one lakh for killing the Jadhav brothers, the police were told. Bhairu Jadhav was immediately taken into custody and later confessed to his role in the crime, police said.
