MUMBAI, SEPT 19: Saloni Balgi of Mary Immaculate Girls High School, Borivli, continued her winning streak by clinching her second title of the season at University Pavilion today. She unseated Niharika Thakkar, last year’s U-16 champion, to claim the MSSA-Colgate Inter-school girls U-14 chess title. Saloni had won the DSO Inter-schools (U-17) last month.
Three other titles were up for grabs on the final day, and eventually, there were five winners.
Kartik Viswanathan of Jamnabai Narsee, the only of the lot to have his own Elo ranking (2173), won the Under-16 title. For a boy who does not have a coach, and practises against the Fritz 5 programme on his computer, his 100 per cent performance — eight points from eight rounds — is commendable. The Girls U-16 title went to Parle Tilak (English)’s Yogita Yevle, third last year.
AKASH TOSSES OUT AMAR:
St Stanislaus’ Akash Khalwadekar defended his U-14 title, but only just. He and Amar Kamat (Patkar Vidyalaya) finished joint winners, but Akash tookhome the trophy after the spin of a coin. Amar was a sporting loser, a ready smile hiding the obvious disappointment.

Sahil was forced to concede a walk-over, and was disallowed from participating in the deciding doubles, after Abhishek Phatarphekar beat Varun Motasha to help Scottish draw level.
