Rohit Sharma had to endure a long wait to play a significant innings for India, but his effort against South Africa in the Twenty20 World Cup gave a glimpse of his talent and character, which should stand him in good stead for India in the future.

His half-century off 40 balls in the must-win game at Kingsmead, completed with a six off the last ball of the innings, propelled India to a fighting score of 153 and an eventual 37-run victory for a spot in the semifinals.

Rohit batted with great maturity and poise in alien conditions and, along with skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, extricated India from a perilous situation of 61 for four.

They put on an invaluable 88-run partnership that helped India reach a respectable total.

“There was a bit of nerves, the team was under pressure because we had lost some early wickets. I had a good partnership with ‘Mahi’ which helped us get a good competitive total. I hope to carry on in the next few games,” Rohit, who who made his international Twenty20 debut in the previous match against England, said.
