CHANDIGARH, May 1: After a lukewarm response to its Flea (Day) market scheme, the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh has again decided to revive it by organising such markets all over the City from May 6.

According to Corporation Secretary D. S. Mangat, the first such market would be organised in Sector 46 and 47 and would be organised every Wednesday at the same site.

On Sundays, the flea market would be organised at Sector 17 (near Football stadium), to be followed by one in Manimajra on Mondays, in Sector 15 on Tuesdays, in Sector 40 on Thursdays, in Sector 27 on Fridays and in Sector 45 on Saturdays.

The Corporation has fixed Rs 20 per day as charges for a 5 feet X 8 feet site, Rs 30 per day for a 8 feet X 8 feet site and Rs 50 per day for a 12 feet X 8 feet site, which would have to be paid in advance. While the sites would be available on "first-come-first-serve" basis, no structure would be allowed to be set up and no civic amenities like lighting, urinals and water would be provided by the Corporation at the flea market sites. The flea market scheme was earlier formulated by the Corporation for rehabilitating all those `rehri and phari wallahs’ who were displaced during the anti-encroachment drive.
