Brazi-lian soccer player Claudinei Resende was killed in a gang-related shooting at a nightclub on Friday in his native city Belo Horizonte. The 26-year-old midfielder for Brazilian club America, who was formerly with Swedish first division club Helsingborg, was shot in the head, according to witnesses. Four of Resende’s friends were hit, three of them suffering severe injuries, in an incident reportedly triggered by an argument at the club an hour earlier. ‘‘He was not involved in the argument,’’ Resende’s friend Samuel dos Reis was quoted as saying on Brazilian television. Police arrested two suspects on Saturday.
Baseggio bursts ball, scored with it
BRUSSELS: The ball burst on impact when midfielder Walter Baseggio scored Anderlecht’s equaliser in their 2-1 home win over La Louviere in the Belgian first division on Saturday. Baseggio shot from the edge of the penalty area and, despite bursting, the deflated ball found the net.
