While hearing an application challenging revision of the creamy layer income base from Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 4.5 lakh, one of the judges on the Constitution Bench, apparently irked at the arguments against the government decision, remarked: “Recession has set in every part of the world but not in lawyers’ fees at least.” Interestingly, the proposal to increase salaries of judges in the higher judiciary has run into trouble with the Finance Ministry and could not clear the Cabinet hurdle despite the Law Minister’s fervent pleas.
