DERA BASSI, Jan 8: Members of local unit of BJP and Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad today held a protest rally in front of the DSP’s office in Mubarakpur against the people responsible for smuggling of about 700-odd oxen to Bihar allegedly for slaughtering.

A large number of people assembled in the morning near DSP office where these oxen were tied for a day to be sent to Bihar. In fact, these oxen were purchased from different mandis during the week for the selling these at high premium in the mandis of Bihar. They raised slogans against the police and demanded registration of case under Section 11 of Cruelty Against Animals Act. When contacted, DSP H.S. Bhullar refuted the allegations and said that the animals taken into custody by the people were purchased from Punjab. The purchasers owning licences had permission to carry them to Bihar for agriculture purposes.

Meanwhile, the protesters met the Dera Bassi SDM Sher Singh Sidhu and sought an inquiry into the illegal smuggling of oxen. They also told the SDM that these oxen would be slaughtered in Bihar.
