Deputy Chief Minister Mukul Sangma has said around 30 big power companies have shown interest in investing in the power sector in Meghalaya. Talking to reporters on Thursday night, he said the Government had floated Expressions of Interest (EoIs) for power investment and there were many bidders.

Sangma said among the bidders were big players like Essar and Jindal groups.

As the state has huge potential for power generation —estimated around 3,000 MW—the Government earlier this year framed a policy to facilitate participation of private players.

Sangma said, “The state has abundant natural resources for development of renewable sources of energy like small hydro projects, biomass gasification, solar energy and biogas. The hilly terrain is favourable for harnessing small and micro hydel power projects.” He told the reporters that the state Government was also contemplating on funding the state electricity board to conduct surveys of river basins to identify potential project sites.
