Concerned over allegations of harassment by a woman officer posted in the Western Command against her seniors, Defence Minister A K Antony has ordered an inquiry to bring out the truth.

The probe comes after the Army issued a statement saying that the allegations were baseless and the woman officer concerned had “mental weakness” recorded in her service profile.

At the same time, the Army said in a press conference in Chandigarh that it would probe the misconduct of Capt Poonam Kaur of the Army Services Corps for communicating with the media without any consent besides investigating the allegations levelled by her of physical and mental harassment against her Commanding Officer and two other senior officers.

A Court of Inquiry (CoI) has been ordered into the matter and an officer of Major General rank will conduct the inquiry. While addressing the press conference, Major General A S C Kamal Mohe said the Army had been known for its fairness and it would bring the truth out. “An inquiry has been ordered and everything will be cleared very soon. The inquiry officer will look into the allegations levelled by her and the misconduct of the lady officer by speaking to the media without following the norms of Army Act,” he added.

Capt Poonam Kaur had alleged on Tuesday that her Commanding Officer and the two other senior officers used to harass her physically and mentally after she refused to become part of the misappropriations in the battalion.
