Social problems including unemployment have forced thousands of ethnic Indian youths in Malaysia towards crimes,according to a top minister.
More than 100,000 ethnic Malaysian Indian youths are involved in crimes,including theft,robbery,distributing drugs,gangsterism and murder,Tamil daily Makkal Osai quoted Malaysian Human Resources Minister S Subramaniam as saying.
Subramaniam cited lack of jobs,guidance and the influence of friends as major contributors to the social problems.
Ethnic Indians,a majority Tamils,form eight per cent of multi-ethnic Malaysia’s population of 27 million people.
Subramaniam,who is an ethnic Indian and also the secretary-general of the Malaysian Indian Congress,a component of the ruling Barisan Nasional party felt that the Indian community and religious leaders should pay serious attention to organising more youth development programmes,the daily added.
