President-elect Pranab Mukherjee’s son Abhijit wants to contest from the Jangipur Lok Sabha seat in Murshidabad vacated by him. Abhijit is currently an MLA from Nalhati in Birbhum.

“Abhijit sent me a proposal that he would like to contest from Jangipur,” Congress MP from Baharampur Adhir Chowdhury said. “I told him that as the district Congress president,I have no problem and I will render all help to him. I sent his proposal to the high command… I believe if the son of Pranab Mukherjee expresses his desire to contest from Jangipur, the high command will not stand in the way.” The AICC general secretary in charge of West Bengal,Shakeel Ahmed, said the high command would decide in due course. “There is still time.”

Chowdhury’s support could prove crucial as the MP holds sway in Murshidabad. Even Mukherjee had gone to him to seek support before the parliamentary elections in 2004.

According to sources,Jangipur MLA and CLP leader Mohammed Sohrab, who was the election agent for Mukherjee, was also an aspirant for the Lok Sabha seat, but may have to now make way for Abhijit.
