Over 24 million Brits tune in to watch William-Kate marry

The BBC provided the official feed for the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Over 24 million viewers on average watched BBC1 and ITV1 television coverage of the royal wedding,broadcasters said.

The BBC,which provided the official feed for the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton,attracted 18.7 million viewers.

ITV1 attracted 5.9 million on average during the ceremony held in Westminster Abbey yesterday.

The BBC said 9.4 million on average had watched BBC1 between 8am and 11am. During that period,the audience grew steadily,with 17.5 million watching in the last 15 minutes.

Between 12.15pm and the news at 1.45pm there was an average of 16.6 million viewers for BBC1,a spokesman said.

Police estimate a million people lined the procession route from the abbey to the Buckingham Palace following the wedding.

The estimated figures for the BBC and ITV put the royal wedding in the top 10 of programmes ever watched in Britain,although more people watched the 1966 World Cup Final and Princess Diana’s funeral in 1997.
