An Indian-origin anaesthetist has been cleared of using the hands of sedated patients to perform sexual acts on himself,after he told a hearing that he became exposed during surgery because his trousers fell as they did not fit.
According to a report in ‘The Daily Telegraph,’ Narendra Sharma was cleared by the General Medical Council (GMC) panel two years after he was acquitted of criminal charges over the allegations.
The GMC claimed that while working at Marie Stopes International Clinic in Manchester,Sharma,took hold of patients’ hands in abortion procedures and exposed himself in the operating theatre.
A health care worker said he took a semi-conscious patient’s hand and performed a stroking movement beneath the operating table.
Sharma was also accused of putting the fingers of a patient through the zip of his trousers.
Sharma,a father of two,told the hearing he exposed himself because a kicking patient caused his trousers,which he had secured with medical tape,to partly fall.
The panel,chaired by Alan Montgomery,ruled that seven allegations could not be proved.
The GMC has failed to discharge the burden of proof, he said. Sharma’s lawyer said “Dr Sharma has strenuously refuted the allegations from the outset. He is relieved this matter is now concluded.
