For one ‘Indian’,the final ends in heartbreak

Gurinder Singh Sandhu, only male cricketer of Indian origin to represent Oz,ended up on losing side.

Medium pacer Gurinder Singh Sandhu’s Sunday could have been very different if Jimmy Peirson stationed behind the stumps, had held onto to an edge offered by India skipper Unmukt Chand.

Sandhu saw the catch being put down. Chand, batting on 38 when he was dropped, went onto play a match-winning knock. Sandhu, the only male cricketer of Indian origin to represent Australia, ended up on the losing side.

Going into the World Cup,Sandhu was tipped to be one of the stars of the tournament. He lived up to the expectations by picking up nine wickets in five games ahead of the final. Bowling coach Craig McDermott, the former Australian Test bowler, said: “Gurinder has got some good skills — slower bouncers. He is a good death bowler and there are not a lot of those around in Australia.”

Sandhu was born in Faridkot in Punjab and his family migrated to Sydney in the ’80s. His father Iqbal drove a taxi to make ends meet. In India,Sandhu’s uncle Sukhdev offered prayers at the village Gurudwara in Hardialeana,Faridkot,on the eve of the final against India.

Sukhdev has been praying on the eve of every game Sandhu has played at the World Cup. However,on Sunday, fortune didn’t favour the Aussie.
