China says corruption still a severe problem

Corruption continues to be a problem even though China has punished several high-profile figures.

China says corruption in the country is still a severe problem even though efforts to combat it have intensified.

The official Xinhua News Agency said Tuesday that the Communist Party’s discipline watchdog says the task of fighting corruption is still an ‘arduous’ one.

It says people have higher expectations for the ridding of corruption but it ‘cannot be eradicated in the short term.’

Chinese President Hu Jintao has said corruption threatens the party’s grip on power.

China has launched numerous anti-graft campaigns in recent years. Some have seen judges and high-profile party figures sentenced to years in prison.

Netizens regularly complain when an official is spotted wearing an expensive-looking watch or in a luxury car.
