South African-born Craig Kieswetter has been called up for England’s one-day international squad for the tour of Bangladesh only four days after qualifying to play for his adopted country.

LONDON: South African-born Craig Kieswetter has been called up for England’s one-day international squad for the tour of Bangladesh only four days after qualifying to play for his adopted country. The 22-year-old Somerset wicketkeeper and top-order batsman has hit some impressive scores playing for the backup England Lions,including 81 in a victory in Dubai over the England team he is about to join for three ODIs starting Feb. 28. Kieswetter joins Kevin Pietersen,Andrew Strauss,Matt Prior and Jonathan Trott as South African-born players in the current team. Both Kieswetter and Trott played for South Africa in the under-19 World Cup.

Butcher Zimbabwe coach

HARARE: Former England player Alan Butcher has been appointed as Zimbabwe’s cricket coach. Zimbabwe Cricket managing director Ozias Bvute and selectors convener Alistair Campbell made the announcement Saturday. The 56-year-old Butcher will be supported by Zimbabwean assistant Stephen Mangongo,batting coach Grant Flower and bowling coach Heath Streak. Campbell says he wants them to “get us into Test cricket in 18 months’ time. Zimbabwe announced in January 2006 that it was temporarily withdrawing from Test cricket and hasn’t played that format since.

Yorkshire sign Tuffey

YORKSHIRE: New Zealand international paceman Daryl Tuffey has signed for Yorkshire as their overseas player for the first part of the 2010 season. The 31-year-old will cover for Ryan Harris while he is playing for Deccan Chargers in the IPL. “I haven’t played county cricket before and it’s always something I’ve wanted to do,” said Tuffey.
