Shiv Kapur has been on a knowledge binge over the last 10 days. The 31-year-old has spent time with England’s multiple Major winner Nick Faldo and modern-day Italian sensations Matteo Manassero and Francesco Molinari to pick their brains, and ensure he makes his Muirfield experience a memorable one.

Kapur is the only Indian golfer in the fray when the British Open tees off at the fabled venue on Thursday. The 31-year-old says he has ‘nothing to complain of’ going into The Open. “The weather has been nice and I managed to get a few practice rounds in. It’s been according to plan so far so I’ve nothing to complain really,” he told The Indian Express from Edinburgh,Scotland.

Kapur spent considerable time with Faldo, who has won The Open Championship thrice. He then teamed up with Manassero and Molinari for a practice round on Tuesday.

“Nick gave me an insight into how the course has changed over the years, ensuring I take care of minor things such as playing with soft hands and using the wind to my advantage. With Francesco and Matteo, the conversation was more to match ideas. We discussed different ways of approaching a hole and considering that we are not big-hitters as such, strategising becomes key,” said Kapur, who is coached by Manassero’s coach Alberto Binaghi.

Unlearning process

Kapur said Muirfield,a links course, will make it tough for the golfers as they’ll have to make drastic changes to their game. “Links golf is totally different. Imagine if in tennis, you had to play on clay for just one week after playing the other 51 weeks on grass. From my equipment to playing style,I’ve had to unlearn a lot and accommodate changes to my game,” he said.
