Coming out in support of the UN mission for resumption of dialogue within Myanmar for the first time, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has said that India will continue to play a “constructive and positive” role for a peaceful and stable Myanmar.

Singh, who met UN Special Envoy Ibrahim Gambari on Tuesday, conveyed India’s support for the UN Secretary General’s ongoing efforts to “encourage a resumption of the dialogue process within Myanmar,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.

The Prime Minister, who spoke to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon last week, said that the “process of national reconciliation and political reform initiated by the Government of Myanmar should be taken forward expeditiously in an inclusive manner, including Aung San Suu Kyi.”

Citing its “multi-dimensional linkages” with Myanmar, India said that as a “close and friendly neighbour”, it wanted any initiatives to be “mindful of the need” to ensure that the country is “peaceful and stable.”

“India will continue to play a constructive and positive role, along with like-minded countries, to this end,” the MEA spokesperson said.

Gambari is in Delhi as part of his consultations with countries in the region on the situation in Myanmar. He called on the Prime Minister and the External Affairs Minister and held discussions with the Foreign Secretary. “Recent developments in Myanmar and the ongoing efforts of the UN Secretary General’s good offices were discussed,” the MEA said.
