Widening the gulf with the Congress, NCP chief Sharad Pawar today said he will not support Sonia Gandhi as prime minister even if it is the only way to keep the BJP out.

Asked if he will support a government led by Sonia in case of a hung Parliament after the general elections, Pawar said in a television interview: ‘‘We will not accept. The Congress has to change its leader.’’

‘‘My suggestion is that the Congress should keep the BJP out and they should elect any other person to lead,’’ he said. Pawar, however, said that even Priyanka Gandhi was not acceptable as ‘‘she is not a member of Parliament. She has not proved her mettle’’.

‘‘…Tomorrow you will ask about Priyanka’s son. It is not proper. The question is also not proper because she is not a member of either of the Houses. Neither is she in public life,’’ Pawar said.
