A surging river Pavana cut off Pimpri-Chinchwad, where manufacturing majors Tata Motors, Bajaj Auto, DaimlerChrysler have their plants, from Pune, disrupting ‘‘movement of personnel.’’ While the Pavana is receding today, all links — road, rail, air — to Mumbai are still cut off, causing disruptions in the supply chain.
Though biggies like Tata Motors and Bajaj Auto say a ‘‘two-day stoppage cannot hit business’’ sources admit if links aren’t restored soon, it will lead to a pile-up of finished goods.
Sachin Saxena, General Manager of LG, which has a huge factory at Ranjangaon, 60 km from Pune, says there has been a ‘‘minor disruption’’ in supplies. ‘‘Nothing is moving between Mumbai and Pune — and that’s causing a delay.’’
Thermax’s MD Prakash Kulkarni admits ‘‘productivity and production have been hit for the last two days by about 25 per cent’’. Many people haven’t been able to come to work, adding to the problem.
According to Praful Talera, Director, Dynamic Logistics, 21 fully loaded containers are stuck on the highway, on the road to JNPT port. ‘‘We have goods worth more than Rs 1 crore in transit.’’ Talera says three truckloads of air freight is waiting to be flown too.
