VADODARA, Aug 5: An abnormally high number of school children of Vadodara suffer from plural dental ailments, according to experts at the inaugural function of month-long `Smiles For All – National Oral Health Programme’ here on Wednesday.

The programme, inaugurated by Mayor Bharati Vyas, will include dental checkup of more than 20,000 school children of the city.

Addressing the gathering, Vyas praised the efforts of the Vadodara chapter of the Indian Dental Association and the programme organiser for creating awareness regarding oral health. She said the VMC would strive to spread the message of importance of dental care among children of corporation schools.

Council on Dental Health (IDA) State Chairman Yogesh Chandarana and chief co-ordinator Amish Mehta told Express Newsline that a large number of school children of Vadodara suffered from various serious dental ailments, mostly due to tobacco-chewing and lack of personal hygiene.

They said participants would not only be educated about oral health, but would also be given free dental packs, informative comics and brushing charts during the programme. School teachers would also be imparted training in the context, they added.

Jayendrabhai Shah, managing director Bright School and Suren Choksi, chairman, Shramik Vidyapith were the guests of honour at the programme, sponsored by Colgate Palmolive (India) Limited.
