The Opposition-sponsored bandh in West Bengal passed off peacefully on Monday despite some stray incidents as train and road transport services were paralysed, state Home Secretary P R Roy said.
At least 383 bandh supporters were arrested statewide, including 33 in the metropolis, Roy told reporters in Kolkata.
He said a clash broke out in Cooch Behar district between bandh supporters and those opposing it, while seven to eight buses were damaged in different parts of the state.
“Attendance in offices was very low,” he said, adding that at tea gardens in Dooars and Darjeeling, there was some absence.
“In the coal mine belt and in the industrial areas of the state, the bandh was not very effective,” the official said.
He said roads were barricaded at different places in the state, mostly in East Midnapore district within which the troubled Nandigram falls.
The bandh was called against the violence in Nandigram.
