MUMBAI, January 9: A builder committed suicide on Thursday afternoon by consuming a can of Baygon spray at his residence at Bhulabhai Desai Road. Veerchand Khimji Savla (47) a resident of Sambhav Tirth, 13th floor was declared brought dead at the Harkisondas Hospital at Charni Road. Police Sub Inspector Hakke of the Gamdevi Police station who is investigating the case said that Savla had left no suicide note in his room. He had consumed an entire can of Baygon and had collapsed in his bedroom soon after. He was rushed to the hospital by his wife and nephew. Police have said that Savla, a small time builder, was having financial problems and had reportedly been suffering huge losses for the last six months. According to Hakke, Savla had borrowed considerable amount of money from a large number of financers and was finding it difficult to repay the loan. This is being cited as a strong reason that drove Savla to end his life.

According to sources, Savla had a major reorganisation plan up his sleeve for which he had taken loan but apparently the plan failed to materialise as he could not garner the required number of buyers. Sources said that Savla usually kept a low profile. This, combined with the tight security outside Savla’s building made it difficult to get more details about the suicide. However, it is believed that apart from business difficulties, Savla had problems on the personal front as well.

Despite his huge debts, Hakke revealed no complaint had been filed against Savla by his creditors at the Gamdevi police station. "We do not know whether any complaint has been lodged against him at any other police station," he added. Savla’s suicide comes in the wake of a 14-year-old student’s suicide in Navi Mumbai as well as an abortive attempt by an engineering student to kill himself by jumping off his college building. A police constable attached to the crime branch also committed suicide yesterday.
