Exposing chinks in the ruling Congress over the idea of setting up a federal investigating agency to counter terrorism, Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh on Tuesday refused to take a stance on this issue. “We have not yet firmed up our stand on the issue,” Deshmukh told reporters after a meeting with Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil.
AICC spokesperson Manish Tewari had on Monday revived the demand for such an agency and appealed to all political parties to reconsider their stance. The issue had been discussed at a Chief Ministers’ meeting earlier, but no consensus could be reached.
A section of the party has reservation about such a federal agency, as it would impinge on states’ powers. No Congress CM has so far come out in support of the party’s demand for such an agency.
Meanwhile, in a separate development, AICC general secretary in charge of Youth Congress and NSUI Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday held a meeting with senior party office-bearers of poll-bound states.
