Sheldon Austin’s home at Malabar Hill has a truly international feel about it. Like most diplomats, Sheldon, the director of the USIS, is a compulsive globe-trotter. In fact, he has moved home to different parts of the world including Brazil, Morocco and Belgium. Now, his abode in Mumbai has knick-knacks from every country he has been posted to. He has lived here for the last 22 months and says it took him just a week to settle in and put up all his personal effects. "It is important to feel at home as soon as possible."

Moving on, the dining room has a wall dedicated to Brazil — including the country’s map made from leather and surrounded by paintings. Another prized possession acquired from there is his figa — this wooden artefact was given to him by a famous Brazilian actress. "It’s something you cannot buy for yourself, it can only be given and it’s meant to bring you luck."

Besides all the artefacts, there’s an entire cabinet dedicated to cook books — yes, Sheldon is a keen foodie. Apart fromwhich, he’s also passionate about music — therefore an impressive collection of CDs reflecting his diverse taste. From Bach to Bob Marley, Sheldon has it all. "I have also added some Indian music to my collection." And he hopes to shop some more during his stay in the city. On the cards are some pieces of Indian furniture to add to his already awesome collection.
