Bal Apte resigns

The state government’s Additional Advocate General Bal Apte has resigned his post for “personal reasons.” Apte took charge of the office on August 9, 1996 and resigned on December 31, 1998. Like the resignations of High Court and Supreme Court judges, resignation of the Additional Advocate General becomes effective from the date of forwarding it. The resignation has given rise to debate in legal circles. Political theories are also floating in the air. It is believed Apte was unhappy with the slow working style of Sena-BJP government. Since Apte is an active member of BJP, insiders have connected his resignation with strained relations between Sena and BJP. But Apte said this was untrue. “I just thought it was enough and felt like continuing as an independent lawyer," he said.

Row over Kurla renaming

Another tussle over names has begun with Union Government’s decision to rename Kurla Terminus as Lokmanya Tilak Terminus. Gurudas Kamat, Lok Sabha member fromMumbai North-East, met Union Home Minister L K Advani and submitted a memorandum asking that the terminus be named after Dr B R Ambedkar.

Kamat maintained Naik’s argument that commuters get confused with the same-sounding Kurla railway station and the Kurla Terminus did not stand because the railway station adjoining Kurla Terminus has been named Tilak Nagar station two years ago.
