On her visit to Nithari today, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi said there was no law and order in Uttar Pradesh and added that Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav had to buckle “under pressure from Congress and other parties” for a CBI probe. She, however, did not reply to questions on imposing President’s rule in the state.
“Law and order ka naam hi nahin hai. Yahan par aap zara aakar dekhiye kya haalat hai. Roz kuch na kuch ho raha hai. (There is nothing like law and order. You can see for yourself. Something or the other is happening everyday),” she said.
The Congress chief had returned only on Friday afternoon from a week-long holiday in Goa and the decision for the Nithari trip was taken during a core committee meeting of the party in the evening. But the decision was not announced to avoid a big gathering at the place, party sources said. For the same reason, it was scheduled for 8.30 in the morning, they said.
“We had demanded for a CBI probe right in the beginning. But the Chief Minister refused to do that…Now it has been done under pressure from the Congress,” she told reporters here.
Meanwhile, the CPI(M) demanded that the CBI inquiry be completed in a time-bound manner. Party politburo member Brinda Karat today visited Nithari village along with the Delhi state committee members of the party. Karat also met the district magistrate and urged him to ensure compensation to the five families whose children have been identified but are still being denied compensation.
