CHANDIGARH, March 6: The State of Punjab today approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court for extension of the time-scale fixed for holding the elections to the Gram Panchayats in the State.

Earlier, by way of a consent order of the court in a writ petition filed by former state chief minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, the election process was initiated with the issuance of a notification on or before March 15 this year and the elections were to be completed by April 15.

Pressing for the application, the state advocate general apprised the court of the decision of the Punjab Government to have direct elections to Panchayat Samitis and Zila Parishads in Punjab, simultaneously with the Panchayat elections.
