NAGPUR, JAN 25: Taking a cue from Mumbai police force, the Nagpur police today introduced a mobile commando force to patrol the streets to check rising crimes in the city.
A city girl-student Prachi Harode, who had foiled an abduction attempt few months back, flagged off the mobile squad from a east city locality in presence of additional director general of police and city Police Commissioner R S Sharma.
Later speaking to newsmen, Sharma said the mobile commandos would help control the street crimes mainly chain snatching, shop and street robberies during peak hours.
Since the commandos are provided with motor-cycles, it would be easier for them to chase criminals in lanes and bylanes without much difficulty. Initially 30 commandos have been deployed but it would be raised to 100 in near future, he said.
The Commandos have been provided with sophisticated weapons like AK47 and carbons and pistols and equipped with wireless communication sets, to be controlled by Crime Branch from city control room, Sharma revealed.
Police have drawn up detailed map of city’s sensitive areas and timing of the deployment of the commandos for effective results, he added.
