Launching a series of attacks past midnight Wednesday in different parts of central and south Bihar, cadres of the CPI (Maoist) damaged railway lines, blew up a bridge and raided a police station to spread terror on the eve of Republic Day. The Naxals have called for a bandh in the state tomorrow.
A large group of heavily armed Naxals damaged tracks at Deo Halt in Aurangabad on the Grand Chord’s Gaya-Mughalsarai section after holding the station master and railway staff at gunpoint.
The attack began past midnight and reports reaching Patna said that several trains, including three Rajdhanis, had been halted in view of the damage to the tracks.
Officials said a bomb-disposal squad was asked to rush to Deo Halt from Gaya but the Naxals blew up a bridge enroute and the team was stranded at Gudru village.
CPI(Maoist) cadres also attacked the Hariharganj police station on the Aurangabad-Palamu border. When reports last came in, they had encircled the police station and were firing heavily.
Officials said there were trying to confirm reports of bombs being placed in Samastipur by the Naxals.
