CHANDIGARH, MARCH 22: Despite a boycott call given by BJP and SAD councillors, chairpersons and deputy chairpersons of three committees of the local Municipal Corporation were elected today.

The BJP-SAD alliance, at its meeting held on March 20, had taken a decision not to participate in the election. While announcing the coalition’s decision to stay away from the poll, Des Raj Tandon and Mohinder Singh (Akali Dal) alleged the committees were constituted illegally.

They stated that no resolution for dissolution and recasting of the committees under Section 42 of the Act was passed in the House and the Mayor could not suo muto dissolve and recast these committees.

Former mayor Kamla Sharma and Congress Councillor Sunita have been elected the chairperson and deputy chairperson of the Slum Development Committee, while R.L. Arora and nominated councillor Dr I.C. Pathak have been appointed as chairman and deputy chairman of the Road Committee, respectively.

Besides, R.S. Bedi and Sudambani Bambah have been elected chairperson and deputy chairperson of the Environment Committee of the corporation.
