Decks have been cleared for South African physiotherapist Heath Matthews to travel to Beijing with the Indian contingent. He will be the first-ever foreign support staff to accompany any Indian Olympic squad.
The Indian Amateur Boxing Federation had requested the IOA to include Matthews with the contingent in order to help the boxers, particularly Akhil Kumar. “This is a wonderful gesture from the IOA and I am sure it will pay rich dividends in India’s quest for a podium finish,” said IABF secretary-general PK Muralidharan Raja.
