In the wake of the Kumbakonam fire tragedy, the Maharashtra government was considering a ban on cooking mid-day meals in schools.
‘‘We are considering a proposal to this effect,’’ School Education Minister Amrish Patel said. The move has been prompted by reports that the fire in Kumbakonam spread from the kitchen to thatched-roof classrooms, killing 90 children.
There are around 75,000 schools across Maharashtra providing mid-day meals to students. However, School Education Department officials pointed out that only three per cent of schools have facility to cook food in their premises.
In Mumbai, students in 1,184 municipal schools are provided mid-day meals, which include khichdi. —(PTI)
