SEPT 18: Local banker Madan Bagayatkar became the first Indian to win a bronze medal at the XI Chess Olympiad for the Blind at Krakow in Poland.
Russia emerged the world champions with an aggregate of 25.5 points to their credit, while Poland and Ukraine won the silver and bronze medals in team events respectively. The Olympiad was a nine-round contest played on Swiss League basis.
