With his long hair and slight stubble, Tejaswi Yadav stands out in a group of India’s u-19 World Cuppers. But being the son of Railways Minister Laloo Prasad Yadav, he is quite used to the attention.

Tejaswi is among the five under-17 players who are travelling with the World Cup team as part of BCCI’s initiative to provide international exposure to young cricketers. Ask him about his famous father’s shadow and he says, “I am quite used to all that by now. I know I will always be referred to as Laloo Prasad Yadav’s son.”

As if aware that there will be questions asked about him being picked among the top five under-17 cricketers, he gives details about his cricketing career. “I play for Delhi. I am an off-spinner and a middle-order batsman. In the national under-17 final, I scored 80-plus. Ishant Sharma and I had a fine partnership down the order,” he says.

“I have interacted with Dav Whatmore during games and at the NCA too. Like everyone else, I too want to play for India,” he says.

After excusing himself, he disappears into a crowd of World Cuppers from various countries. Without gun-totting security men following him around, Tejaswi in Malaysia gets a chance to be a cricketer minus the baggage of a famous father.
