MUMBAI, November 20: Five advocates had a narrow escape at Mazagaon court this afternoon when the cables of an elevator snapped while they were coming down from the fourth to the first floor of the building.

Luckily for the advocates, Ashok Patil, Shinde, Sayeed Ahmed, Nandkumar Shete and Shakeel Ahmed, the cables snapped just as the elevator reached the first floor and came crashing down to the ground. While most received minor injuries, the fan in the elevator fell on Ahmed, injuring him on the forehead. The oldest court building in the city, Mazagaon court was inaugurated after renovation by Chief Justice M B Shah and Chief Minister Manohar Joshi on August 2, 1997. However, the quality of the six lifts in the five-storeyed building has been poor.

According to A M Sayyed, former president of Mazagaon Court Bar Association, the elevators were poorly maintained despite repeated complaints made to various authorities.

“The advocates received only minor injuries as the shock was absorbed by the springs at the base of the shaft, but anything could have happened if the elevator had crashed from the upper floors,” Sayyed said.

Meanwhile, the Mazagaon Court Bar Association has threatened to boycott the court proceedings from tomorrow if immediate action is not taken and the elevators not replaced.
