The expert committee appointed by the Left Government to look into the controversial portions in this year’s text books for class III, V and VII has recommended a permanent text book commission.

The committee, headed by Left ideologue Dr K N Panikkar, would submit its final report to the Government on Tuesday. Panikkar told the media on Monday that the proposed text book commission should be given the power to monitor the content of the text books before they are being moved to the classrooms.

In the beginning of this academic year, Kerala had witnessed a month-long agitation by the Congress and other Opposition parties seeking withdrawal of the text books which contained portions “propagating atheism and communism”. Earlier, the committee, in its interim report, had asked the Government to remove the portion of the class VII textbook which referred to atheism. Ruling out the Opposition demand for withdrawal of the text books, the Committee suggested that textbooks should be enriched with serious content.
