BANGALORE, APRIL 13: The Karnataka assembly on Thursday passed a bill to regulate cultivation, production and processing of oil palm to protect the interests of the growers and to ensure orderly development of the sector.

The bill introduced by Horticulture Minister Allam Veerabhadrappa was welcomed by both the treasury and Opposition benches. He said oil palm had high oil yielding capacity and was considered suitable for cultivation to enhance the country’s oil production. Karnataka is one of the states covered under the Union Government’s oil palm project.

The bill among other things, assured the grower, sale of his produce and payment of sale for his output, constitution of a price fixation committee to ensure the grower a reasonable return and constitution of a project management committee to recommend and advice to the government regarding development of oil palm cultivation.
