FEROZEPUR, Nov 2: A B Saharya, chief justice, Punjab High Court last evening said that district-level lok adalats functioning in Punjab had started paying dividends to feuding parties by delivering cheaper and immediate justice to the weaker sections of the society in particular.

The CJ was here on a two-day tour to inspect judicial working. He said consistent efforts by judicial officers had reduced number of pending cases a large number of pending cases, saving time and money of both the parties and infusing confidence in the judicial system amongst the common man.

Chief Justice Saharya, apart from other courts, also inspected a lok adalat held by M S Bhalla, district and session judge. Five lok adalats functioning here have settled 24 pending cases to remit Rs 19,49,930 to claimants. Saharya told mediapersons here that 12 lok adalats conducted in district Ferozepur during January 1998 to October 1998, have settled 326 out of 543 pending cases amicably, saving time and money of the feuding parties.

Later, he laid wreaths on the samadhi of three national martyrs Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev at Hussainiwala on the Indo-Pak border. He also witnessed the Retreat ceremony and gave sweet and fruits to Jawans of BSF and Pak Rangers.
