MUMBAI, July 21: Former world professional billiards runner-up Devendra Joshi and Test cricketer Abey Kuruvilla were among the sportspersons who bagged the Maharashtra State Government’s Shiv Chhatrapati awards for 1995-96 and 1996-97 respectively.

Among other prominent award-winners for the period 1995-96 were former men’s National tennis champion Nitin Kirtane, former junior national boys’ badminton champion Vijay Lancy and athletes Siddharth Basak and Bhagyashree Bille.

The awards, announced here today by state Sports Minister Prataprao Jadhav, carry a cash prize of Rs 25,000, a citation and a memento.

The Dadoji Konddeo awards for coaches for 1995-96 and 1996-97 were also announced.

Former world amateur billiards champion Wilson Jones, who has coached several top-notch cueists, and well-known swimming coach Sandeep Divgikar who is the mentor of past internationals Anita Sood, Vishal Kapoor and Gaurav Kapoor won the honour for the year 1996-97. Athletics coach Frank George Alphonso, who guidedLeelamma and Satyabhama to international reckoning figures in the 1995-96 coaches roll of honour.

The Minister also announced a grant of Rs 1,000 per month to Mary Philips, the 74-year-old Pune-based widow of 1936 Berlin Olympics hockey player Joe Philips who is living in penury doing menial jobs.
