A top leader of the PPP-led ruling coalition has alleged that elections in Jammu and Kashmir were “farcical”.
Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman, who also heads the Special Parliamentary Committee on Kashmir, told a visiting Hurriyat delegation that Pakistan was united on the issue of Kashmir and supported Kashmiris in their “struggle for the right to self-determination”.
During a meeting with the Hurriyat team led by Abdul Ghani Butt at Parliament House on Thursday, Rehman alleged that the “farcical” elections in Jammu and Kashmir were not “a substitute for the plebiscite mandated by the UN”.
He said Pakistan wanted to resolve the Kashmir issue peacefully in the light of UN resolutions and according to the “wishes” of the Kashmiri people.
Butt briefed the meeting about the situation in Jammu and Kashmir and claimed Kashmiris had rejected the current electoral process.
